West Barns Primary School Film

Zero Waste Dunbar is very pleased to launch a films which were made by the pupils of West Barns Primary School as part of a collaboration with us.

These films highlight the issues with litter in the environment and aim to encourage the public to take their litter home to reuse or recycle it as part of the school’s, ‘Take it Home’ campaign. We will post one film today and another tomorrow.

One film is an animation and was made by the P6/7 class who worked with the animator Emma Dougherty from Stop Mo Go. The Children wrote all the scripts and did all the animation and sound recording themselves.

They have done an amazing job and we would like to ask everyone to share the film far and wide as the pupils want to see how much of an impact they can make with their campaign by sending out the message via the internet.

The school did a variety of relevant activities to support the campaign which led to the films such as a litter pick and a waste audit of the rubbish, they spoke to specialists, undertook research, created reports, leaflets and designed signs to be used in the community. The puppets used were made by animating characters created by Zero Waste Scotland as part of their communications toolkit.

We would like to thank all the pupils and staff for the amazing work they did on this entire project and hope you will join us in spreading their films and their message as far as we can,

Go Zero Challenge

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__IaUDhRKok

All 6 of our local schools are taking the Go Zero Challenge – working to become Scotland’s 1st Zero Waste Schools!

Our schools have carried out waste audits to get a better understanding of what their waste is.  They are making plans and taking action to reduce, reuse and recycle more materials to send less waste to landfill.

The challenge extends beyond school life and our young people are applying what they are learning at school to all aspects of their lives out with school too.

All households in the Dunbar and East Linton Ward can take the challenge too  CLICK HERE – take the challenge!

Dunbar Grammar School is Recycling

Waste Audits with Schools and local businessesThe Zero Waste Dunbar team is working with Dunbar Grammar School to develop it’s recycling facilities.

As of this week the school will have the facility to send cardboard, glass, cans and plastic bottles to be recycled as well. This is in line with the recycling facilities available to each household. There will be several hubs situated throughout the school, each with three bins – one for paper and cardboard, one for glass, cans and plastic and one for everything else, and each classroom will have a green and a blue bin the same as the household ones.

Recycling bins DGS

Eventually, instead of just recycling as much of their waste as they can, DGS would like to reduce the waste they produce in the first place.

Please help to do this by encouraging your child to bring a reusable water bottle to school.

Good to Go in Dunbar

Good to go in actionDiners in Dunbar need no longer feel embarrassed to ask for a ‘doggy bag’ for the leftover food they’re not able to finish while dining out.

The Scottish Government’s ‘Good to Go’ scheme, run by Zero Waste Scotland has launched across Scotland following a successful pilot scheme in 2014, which saw an average 42 per cent reduction in food waste per restaurant.

Eateries throughout the region are being urged to sign up to the initiative, which provides free Good to Go boxes for leftovers. According to Zero Waste Scotland research, two-fifths of diners say they are too embarrassed to ask restaurant staff for a ‘doggy bag’, while three-quarters of those surveyed stated that they would welcome being offered the option.

Ylva Haglund, food waste campaigns manager at Zero Waste Scotland, pictured left, said: “Of the 16 restaurants in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Irvine and East Kilbride that took part in the pilot campaign, the average food waste figure fell by 42% as diners took home their leftovers – and 92% of those stated that they later ate the leftovers. Our research showed that if restaurants across Scotland routinely offered doggy bags to customers, it could save the equivalent of almost 800,000 full meals going in the bin every year.

“Additional feedback from the restaurants suggested that the pilot also prompted them to implement additional food waste reduction measures, such as adjusting portion sizes, changing menu options, and checking if diners actually wanted sides such as chips or vegetables before serving them.”

Diners are also being asked to contact their favourite restaurants via Twitter and Facebook to tell them they’d like to see the Good to Go service offered.

Any restaurant or food business of small to medium size in Scotland can apply to sign up to Good to Go and receive a free starter pack of Good to Go doggy bags, stickers, posters and branding.
