See Composting. Most garden waste is home compostable. It can also be put into your brown bin or taken to your local recycling center. About 92% of households in east Lothian are offered the chance to take part in the garden waste collection using brown wheeled bins. The material collected is composted then used as a soil conditioner on agricultural land in east Lothian. Gifts
Use gift bags that can be reused instead of using wrapping paper. If using wrapping paper, tie with ribbon or colored string so that the paper can be reused or easily recycled.You can buy waste free gift’s such as vouchers for a cinema trip, a massage or health spa. If your feeling generous ask people to donate money to your favorite charity rather than buy you a gift.
Glass
Glass makes up approximately 9% of all household waste. As well as conserving raw materials making new glass from waste glass uses 20% less energy and produces 20% less air pollution than in its original production. Glass can be put in your green recycling bin and can also be taken to your local recycling center.
Glasses (Drinking)
Drinking glasses that are in good condition can be sold or given to you’re local charity shop. Please do not put drinking glasses into glass recycling points. This will cause contamination as the glass they are made from requires a higher temperature to melt than glass used to make bottles and jars and may result in the contents of the glass recycling point having to be sent to landfill instead of the glass being recycled.

Take any unwanted spectacles to your local optician . They will send them on to communities in developing countries via vision aid overseas.
Grass
See also garden waste. Try grass-cycling, which is an easy way to recycle your grass cuttings after mowing your lawn. Simply leave the cuttings on the ground as a fertilizing mulch. This also reduces the need to water and feed your lawn. Special grass-cycling mowers chop up the grass into extra fine particles which are quickly broken down and absorbed back into the lawn. Grass can also be composted, but a lot added to your home compost bin can cause problems. Make sure you add about the same volume of dry material (such as shredded paper, scrunched up cardboard or dry leaves with the grass. Grass is accepted for large scale composting via the garden waste collections and can also be put in your brown garden waste bin.
Hair
Compost or dig hair directly into the soil. Hair contains valuable nutrients. Pet hair can also be home composted.
