In 2013 Scotland used 750 million single use carrier bags, and the average plastic carrier bag is used for just 12 minutes, but could take between 500 and 1000 years to break down in the environment!
In 2014 the Scottish Government introduced a minimum 5p charge in single use carrier bags. Within a month Asda reported seeing a fantastic 90% reduction in the number of plastic bags distributed across their stores in Scotland.
So let’s keep it up! Remember to take your reusable bags with you, keep a stash in your car and a hand bag in your coat pocket, or if your only buying something light you might not even need to use a bag at all.
