Both of Pencaitland’s Brownie packs are under the threat of closure due to a lack of adult volunteers to keep them going.
But now a similar threat hangs over both the 1st and 2nd Pencaitland Brownies. By Christmas, if adult volunteers don’t come forward to assist in the running of the Brownie packs they will shut up shop, leaving the village and surrounding area without a place for girls to go, to learn a range of invaluabe social and life skills outside of a school and home environment.
Can you make a difference?

Joyce… good suggestion. The Community Council is keen to help and can organise the use of Trevelyan Hall for a meeting with parents if this is thought necessary/useful. If parents were made aware of what’s needed to keep the Brownies going surely, by banding together, parents can share the load rather than looking for one champion to step up and take on all the work?
Lorna, why not try what I have done in the past several times and call a meeting of all parents to discuss the future of the units. Put a letter out first. It’s more difficult for parents to be apathetic when faced with leaders and downhearted Brownies. You could serve teas/coffees and have displays of what Brownies get up to. Would be a feather in your cap as a DC elect! Remember my “fight” in Menstrie to get Brownies going?
Wishing you well in finding new leaders! Not everyone can or are willing to give a lifetime to Guiding and I know how hard it can be to keep units open. You can only do your best. xx

Thanks for posting this. We are hopeful someone will come and take over running the Brownies in Pencaitland.
It is with great regret that both Roni and I will finish running 2nd Pencaitland Brownies December this year. We will both have been running it for just under 7 years by then.
We have had some amazing experiences along the way and seeing the girls grow in confidence and achieve things they never thought they’d be able to do has been wonderful. It has been a great adventure for us and we both feel privileged to have been a small part in the lives of so many girls in Pencaitland.
We have both personally gained so much from doing Brownies and we hope that someone will be interested in taking over the running of 2nd Pencaitland Brownies, so that Pencaitland children may continue to benefit from girl guiding and all that it offers.
