Help Cubs & Beavers return to Pencaitland
Can you spare a couple of hours a week to help the youth of the village and keep them occupied? Not that long ago Pencaitland had a thriving Beaver Colony and Cub Pack. However both closed due to lack of leaders.

We’ve been asked by Heather Jackson and Fiona Hopkinson of ADC Cubs to pass on their plea to the people of Pencaitland, Boggs Holdings, New Winton and Glenkinchie…
“Our plea is to try and resurrect both Beavers and Cubs within Pencaitland as both Haddington and Tranent are unable to meet demand and both have waiting lists that are bursting at the seams!!
We are looking for interested parties, male or female aged 18+ who are enthusiastic, motivated and like children to get involved with the Scout movement. No experience is necessary as full training is given.

As part of East Lothian’s Local Development Plan Community Councils and individuals across the county were asked to take part in the process, offering their views and key concerns. These will hopefully be taken up by ELC and replace the current East Lothian Local Plan 2008.

PTA Fun Run route finalised
Whether you plan to take part or you simply want to know which spots would be good to see the action on the day (Saturday 24th March), the map below will tell you what you need to know.
Families can take part (starting at 2pm with registration at 1pm) in the 3.5 kilometre route. Alternatively there’s a 10 kilometre Cycle route. For the more ambitious there are two longer runs of either 5 or 10 kilometres.
All the proceeds from the day will be split between the PTA and Pencaitland Playgroup.
Anyone interested in the recent preliminary work in and around the grounds of Pencaitland Parish Church can now view detailed planning application information on the East Lothian Council website.
These plans stem from safety concerns originating in 2008 over the narrowness of the main road footpath and are the culmination of many years of discussion and debate amongst interested parties, including the Church, the Community Council, East Lothian Council, the school, Pencaitland’s Fatal Footpath Campaign and other interested parties.
There are two applications:
- Formation of hardstanding areas and part demolition of wall – link
- Resurfacing of existing footpaths, formation of new footpaths, car parking area, erection of fencing, gates, wall, installation of lighting and a change of use from domestic ground to public ground and public ground to domestic ground – link
The first application relates to the creation of an opening to a wall to the eastern perimeter of the church grounds, but it is the second application where the bulk of the changes which affect the community are explained. There are a number of supporting documents — 25 in all.
A good overview of what is planned can be gained from viewing the PDF file plan of the whole section of works, running from the school car park to the east, to the stone roadbridge to the west.
Making a public comment on the plans
We would encourage everyone with a view on these plans, whether for or against, to leave a comment on the ELC website. It is only through airing your support or concerns that they can be addressed, so it is in everyone’s interest to do so.

Pollingtons pulls up in Pencaitland
Michael Pollington brought his fine food and drink van to Pencaitland today in what will be a regular stop-over on Thursdays at two locations in the village.

Look out for the mobile specialist in both Easter and Wester Pencaitland each Thursday.
Wester Pencaitland: close to the Mercat Cross and bus stop between 10am and 11am.
Easter Pencaitland: near the Winton Arms Car Park between 11am and noon.

Pencaitland PTA Fun Run set for 24th March
Time to dig out those running shoes, dust them down and get in a few warm-up laps before this month’s PTA Fun Run!
Whether young or old the PTA are looking for individuals, families and groups who would like to take part in the various Fun Runs and the Cycle Route planned for later this month.

Today’s Police surgery moved to 1pm
Contrary to the earlier report about today’s Police Surgery next to Trevelyan Hall, the time has had to be moved to 1pm and not 3pm as previously reported. This was to due other deminds on resources.

Bringing back wildlife to Pencaitland
Whether or not you have an interest in gardening there’s a good chance that you know our local species of bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects are now in a struggle for their very survival. But it needn’t bee (excuse the pun) that way.

Recent BBC TV programme Bees, Butterflies and Blooms, presented the case for reintroducing many indigenous species of wildflower that in recent history have all but disappeared from our gardens, verges and open spaces.
Presented by Sarah Raven, the show argues that if we don’t act then many native species of pollinating insects are in danger of being lost forever.
At Pencaitland Community Council we’re keen to take up this challenge and explore ways that the local community can work together. We want to pinpoint areas which, rather than being left as mowed strips of grass or beds with nectar-poor plants, could be populated with a variety of native and other nectar-rich species that would give our wildlife a chance at long term recovery.
