Pencaitland’s Spar gets a makeover

The Spar Westend Service Station has just finished its 6th makeover in 25 years.

Best known to many villagers as the local paper and milk stop, the Spar is actually an Aladdin’s cave of goods. It plays an important role in the village for those who can’t, or don’t want to, commute to supermarkets to get their essential groceries.

But over and above milk, papers and bread, the shop, run by father and son team Imtiaz and Karim Ali, also provides an off-licence, fuel, dry cleaning, lottery tickets, DVD rental, newspaper delivery (to Wester Pencaitland) and will even take grocery orders over the phone for home delivery or pickup.

As Karim explains, “Originally we were just going to bring in the new refrigerated units but we’ve now done a lot more to the place”.

The Spar is open 7am to 9pm Monday to Saturday and 7am to 8pm Sundays. Click here for more pictures of the upgraded interior.

Pencaitland responds to new ELC development plan

As part of East Lothian’s Local Development Plan Community Councils and individuals across the county were asked to take part in the process, offering their views and key concerns. These will hopefully be taken up by ELC and replace the current East Lothian Local Plan 2008.

We published an article on this process back in January this year.

The culmination of this exercise was a submission from your Community Council, which can be read below…

Reporting road or pavement problems to the Council

After a winter of high winds though little snow, you might be wondering how best to go about reporting problems with roads and pavements in and around the village.

The good news is that in this digital age it really couldn’t be any easier to report problems to the Council. Here’s one method…

Fixmystreet.com is a fantastic initiative from the mySociety team, which in turn is a charitable initiative from the UK Citizens Online Democracy. All you need to do in order to report a local issue is enter your postcode, supply (optional) contact details, upload a picture if you have one, then just hit send. It really couldn’t be much simpler or user friendly.

You then receive a confirmation email with a link from the website, click the link to confirm and you’re done. Your local council has now been alerted courtesy of Fixmystreet.com.

Below you can see an example of a submitted problem on the Fixmystreet.com website.

Using the Fixmystreet.com website couldn't be simpler for reporting road or pavement issues.
