Seeking used equipment for PTA Summer Fayre

You can help contribute to the up-coming Pencaitland PTA Summer Fayre’s success. Just take a quick look in your garage or loft for still usable equipment that otherwise is simply gathering dust and taking up useful space. If you can donate it to the PTA, then your generosity will help towards raising those much needed funds and ensure that your contribution’s usable life is usefully extended.

Every year the Parent Teachers Association at Pencaitland Primary School organises a Fayre with the objective of raising cash to buy much needed items and transport which cannot be provided from other sources.

The PTA would be grateful of donations of equipment to be sold at this year's Summer Fayre

This year’s Summer Fayre takes place on the 28th of May, between 1 and 4pm within the School’s grounds. Everyone is welcome.

Ormiston dental surgery set to close

Members of the local community have recently received a letter from Lynda Carlisle B.D.S., who for many years has operated a Dental Surgery catering to NHS patients from a practice based in Ormiston’s high street. The surgery is being forced to close at the end of May.

Members of the local community have recently received a letter from Lynda Carlisle B.D.S., who for many years has operated a Dental Surgery catering to NHS patients from a practice based in Ormiston’s high street. The surgery is being forced to close at the end of May.

For people in and around Pencaitland it was a great service, both for its convenience and proximity as well as welcoming NHS clients.

Sadly, due to new regulations Lynda Carlisle has been forced to close the dental practice. As her letter explains, “New regulations recently introduced by the Scottish government dictate that all dental surgeries must have ‘a decontamination room’ dedicated to sterilising instruments. Despite there being no evidence basis for this need, all surgeries not conforming will be closed. My premises have not got sufficient space for this extension, so closure is inevitable.”

Fortunately Lynda Carlisle isn’t leaving anyone in the lurch. As she goes on to explain, “The good news is that the ‘Sidegate Dental Practice’ in Haddington has agreed to accept block transfer of all my regular registered patients, thus ensuring that they can continue to receive NHS dentistry.”

The Sidegate Dental Surgery is at 7 Sidegate in Haddington and can be contacted on 01620 824033.

Many patients will be very sorry to see the end of the Ormiston Dental Surgery which has been run by Lynda and her assistant Shirley for 26 years. We wish them both the best for the future.

As Paul Thomas explains, “We know no one likes it when fares go up and it is not a decision we take lightly – that is why we have worked to keep as many fares as possible at current levels.” He adds, “Like many businesses across the country, we are not immune to the realities of the unprecedented economic and operational environment we are currently working in. We have a duty to ensure we secure the future stability, sustainability and development of our business, which is vitally important for the local economy.

For anyone needing further information, the customer services line is 08708 72 72 71 which operated Monday to Friday, from 8am to 5pm.

Rural villages win super-fast broadband funding

Neighbouring East Linton and Garvald & Morham Community Council have landed funding which will allow them to develop super-fast, next-generation broadband for their communities — residents who previously had very slow or no service at all.

Leader funding secured for super-fast broadband in parts of rural East LothianThe initial plan is to roll out a 20Mbps service to the communities and businesses of East Linton, Garvald, Morham, Gifford and most of the areas in between. That’s a full 12Mbps faster than the very best connections most people in rural East Lothian can ever hope to get at the moment.

The story began in 2004 when locals in Garvald were told by BT that their exchange would not be broadband enabled. Similarly the Morham area were told their telephone lines would not be upgraded to receive broadband from the Haddington exchange. That prompted residents and businesses within the Garvald & Morham community to seek funding from Leader Plus and East Lothian Council to set up a community wireless broadband service. The community won the funding, operating a 2Mbps service since June 2005.
