Sun Shines on Pencaitland’s Sports Day

Pencaitland Primary held its regular Sports Day on Tuesday the 25th of June in the grounds of the school. Once again the weather delivered with clouds breaking to give the kids a very pleasant afternoon.

Forth House won overall once all the race winners from each of the four houses were tallied up. There was also a good turnout from Pencaitland’s parents who took part in the mum’s and dad’s races to wrap up a great afternoon.

Starting just after lunchtime the events included house teams competing in – welly throwing, basketball hoops, obstacle course, football, netball, egg & spoon, running and sack race.

Towards the end it was down to the kids from P7 to ask Head Teacher Mary McCall to encourage mums and dads (they didn’t require much prompting) to show their mettle in a mad dad dash, possibly more for pride rather than victory.

Congratulations, to all the kids of all four houses at Pencaitland Primary for participating, and equally, if not actually more so, for all the heart attack victims amongst the parents post their wrap up races…

NHS Lothian warning over seasonal flu and meningitis

NHS Lothian are warning people to be aware that seasonal influenza is now circulating. It can be severe in those with chronic diseases such as asthma or those with low immunity due to medical treatment.

Symptoms of flu include sudden onset of fever, cough as well as sore throat, aching muscles and joints. The best advice for treating flu in healthy people is to stay at home, rest, drink plenty of fluids and take pain relievers such as paracetamol. Children under 16 should not take any medicines containing aspirin.

Maintaining good cough and hand hygiene, such as covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough and sneeze, disposing of the tissue as soon as possible and cleaning your hands as soon you can, are important actions that can help prevent the spread of germs and reduce the risk of transmission.

Unfortunately, at this time of year the NHS are also highlighting that the germ that causes meningitis (Meningococcus) can also be more common. NHS Lothian Health Protection Team is encouraging parents to be vigilant for symptoms and signs of meningitis. Symptoms include:

  1. High temperature or feeling feverish
  2. Flu like aches and pains in muscles and joints
  3. Stiff or sore neck and back
  4. Severe headache
  5. Vomiting
  6. Dislike of bright lights
  7. Skin rash – small red or purple spots or blotches, which can appear suddenly,
    spread rapidly and may not fade if pressed
  8. Drowsiness, loss of consciousness or coma

Great turnout for 2012 Pencaitland Litter Pick-Up

Many thanks to all those who helped make our annual Litter Pick-up a success this year, despite the constant threat of rain. We had over 50 kids and parents, plus our local MP Fiona O’Donnell and primary school Head Mary McCall at the event.

Finally, we ran a raffle for all kids who took part in this year’s event with head teacher Mary McCall doing the honours and selecting the winning ticket. Heather Hamilton (lucky number 20) was the winner of the prize of a Fujifilm digital camera, case and 4GB memory card, making her the official event photographer for next year’s litter pick-up.

Today is Pencaitland’s Litter Pick 2012… did you know?

Did you know, according to the Word Wildlife Fund each tonne of paper (about 1000 kilos) recycled saves fifteen average-sized trees, as well as their surrounding habitat and wildlife?

Reclaimed waste paper now represents something like 63 percent of the fibre used to produce paper and cardboard in the UK.

Day 3: Pencaitland’s Litter Pick 2012… did you know?

Did you know that 100,000 Scots joined the campaign to make Scotland cleaner and greener in 2011?

That was part of the National Spring Clean organised by Keep Scotland Beautiful and this year’s Pencaitland Litter-pick on Sunday is part of the 2012 campaign.

Through National Spring Clean, Keep Scotland Beautiful encourages people to get together and help pick up litter from their neighbourhood each spring: a time of year when Scots traditionally give their homes a clean sweep and start spending more time outdoors again after a long winter.

Whilst our winter and early spring have been mild this year, we have had recent freezing overnight and quite a bit of rain. We’re hoping we won’t have either this Sunday.

National Spring Clean includes litter picks taking place over a two month period: 1st April – 31st May 2012, to make it more accessible to a wider number of participants.

Pencaitland’s Litter Pick 2012… did you know?

Fly-tipping is the common term used to describe waste illegally deposited on land. It can range from a single bin bag to thousands of tonnes of construction and demolition waste.

Fly-tipping is everyone’s problem

  • Uncontrolled waste disposal can be hazardous to the public who may come in to contact with it e.g. chemical wastes, electrical items, syringes.
  • Environmental damage can result from illegally dumped waste.
  • Fly-tipping looks unsightly which can have a detrimental effect on the appeal of an area or can harm investment into an area.
  • Cleaning up fly-tipping costs council tax payers’ money.

Pencaitland Youth Football Club Open Day – 6 August

Ian Archer and the team behind the Pencaitland Youth Football Club are running an open day for new kids wanting to take part.

As Ian explains, “I’m sure you are missing your fix of football on a Saturday morning so luckily, ahead of the new season starting when the school summer holidays are over, we are having an open day to encourage more kids born in 2004/2005 to join the club.

New PYFC trials - 6 August 2011

Hopefully many of the current squads can come along and show the newcomers how it is done. We’ll have the usual mix of fun games and 4v4 matches.

Hope to see you and your kids on the 6th – note starts at 10am, not our usual 9am start.”

So if you have a boy or girl born on 2004 & 2005 come along to a fun morning of soccer 4’s on Saturday 6 August 2011 from 10am to 12 noon at Pencaitland Park.

PYFC aims to have the new 2005 age group up and running from 20 August and also has additional spaces in its 2001 & 2003 age groups. If you are interested in finding out more about these age groups, please contact Jim.
