Police advise caution over spate of opportunist thefts

At last week’s Community Council meeting the issue of break-ins was raised with attending Police reps.

The Community Council understands that there has been a spate of opportunistic break-ins across the ward. From what can be gathered it is believed that these recent crimes can be attributed to an individual known to the Police.

Fortunately, it is important to emphasise that crime of any kind is almost a non-issue in this part of East Lothian.

The modus operandi of this current perpetrator is to take advantage of unlocked car or home doors, taking anything of value.

More recently a number of people have reported their bikes being stolen and we have fresh accounts of people discovering that valuables or cash have been taken from their homes whilst they slept. According to Police the person behind this activity takes full advantage of the fact that many houses are simply left unlocked.

The advice is simple. Do lock garages, car doors and most importantly your home’s doors and windows at all times.

Police move to withdraw counter service in Tranent and all traffic wardens

Locally the public counter at Tranent Police Station may close, whilst all police traffic wardens are likely to be withdrawn across Scotland.

A recent Police Scotland review has resulted in proposals to pull traffic wardens across the whole of Scotland and locally to reduce counter cover to Haddington and Musselburgh.

As it affects this part of the county, Tranent will probably lose its public counter provision. Changes would also be made to the opening times of the public counters at the Musselburgh and Haddington police stations, both of which would open 8am-6pm seven days a week – increasing the number of days the stations open and meaning they would open early all days, but losing late openings during the week.

Phoenix Drama Club places going fast

We’ve had reports that the two drama classes being offered by Natasha Phoenix this September, in Pencaitland’s Bowling Club, are filling fast.

Natasha Phoenix aims to bring a drama club to Pencaitland in the new school year.Classes start on the 4th September with two groups – ‘Fledglings‘ for primary 2,3 and 4 kids starts at 3.45pm – ‘Fliers‘ for primary 5,6 and 7 kids begins at 4.45pm.

Phoenix Drama Club set to start September

Pencaitland resident Natasha Phoenix has firmed up dates for the first round of drama classes being held in the village Bowling Club. Check out her new website for further details.

Phoenix Drama Club starts classes for P2's to P7's in two classes starting 4 September 2012. Click for more details.As we reported in May local mum and Primary school Teacher Natasha Phoenix is planning to bring drama classes to kids from all over Fa’side.

After school classes begin on the 4th September based in Pencaitland’s Bowling Club, with Primary 2, 3 and 4 kids at 3.40pm and Primary 5, 6 and 7’s at 4.40pm.

But these sessions are about much more than learning lines, aiming to provide a club which offers fun, quality experiences for children who feel involved, valued and respected. The aim is to use a child-centred approach to planning, using the kids’ imaginations and interests as starting points. Lastly, it goes into teaching Neuro Linguistic Programming and Emotional Literacy skills and strategies, offering children enhanced life skill learning.

Following the 2012 elections of Councillors to East Lothian Council, the Fa’side ward gained a new face in Shamin Akhtar (LAB).

Shamin Akhtar

Shamin has lived in Pencaitland since 2007, moving to the village from Musselburgh with her partner Ryan and their two young children in Limekilns. After graduating from the University of Abertay, Dundee in Biotechnology she was elected President of her Students’ Association, going on to be elected the President of the National Union of Students Scotland. Shamin has subsequently spent much of her career in the voluntary and community sector, including more than a decade working for SCVO, the national umbrella body for Scottish charities. She has also volunteered with a wide range of charities and community groups over the last 20 years including Chair of a national housing organisation. Closer to home, Shamin has supported Pencaitland playgroup and volunteered with the school’s PTA.

New Fraser Centre plans community open day 9th June

The Fraser Centre, formerly the Winton Cinema in Tranent, is being given a new lease of life as a learning, development, arts and entertainment centre.

The former Winton Cinema will now be a community trust backed venue.

Set up as a community trust, the intention is to be able to offer the former cinema to various community groups as a venue for holding educational, arts and entertainment activities. The aim is to include conferences, training projects, concerts, as well as a cinema; harking back to the origins of the building.

The Fraser Centre Community Trust (FCCT) was formed in 2011 with the aim of providing an Arts, Learning and Development Centre in Tranent. The 700 seater 1900’s style cinema is in the Fa’side constituency which has around 14,000 residents with varying needs for just such a nearby venue for their communities.

In 2011 a long term lease with the FCCT culminated in the latest revival of this unique venue.

Labour ousts Ruth Currie in Fa’side ward

With the outcome of East Lothian’s Council elections still in the balance across the county, the results for the Fa’side ward are now in.

Long time councillors for Labour Jim Gillies and Donald Grant have been re-elected. Joining them for Labour is new recruit Shamin Akhtar (pictured centre front). For the SNP Kenny Macleod held his seat but his colleague Ruth Currie suffered at the hands of a strong local Labour campaign across Fa’side.

Congratulations to all the re-elected and newly elected members for Fa’side. Pencaitland Community Council hopes to enjoy both fruitful and regular contact with all the elected councillors for the ward.

UPDATE: The results have now been declared with Labour holding 10 councillors, the SNP 9, Conservatives with 3 and 1 independent. The Lib-dems have therefore been wiped from the political landscape in East Lothian. A full breakdown on the voting results can be found on East Lothian Council’s website.

More snow & freezing a possibility

With snow already falling and the potential for more forecast we thought it would timely to remind the residents of Fa’side about the Community Council’s store of snow shovels.

Nothing is melting as it's just way too cold.

In the event that today’s snow doesn’t melt overnight, you can now borrow a shovel supplied by East Lothian Council to the community by calling 340 641 or 340 115. You do not need to leave a deposit — just your name and a means of contact.

But we do ask that any borrowed equipment is returned once any snow has melted, so it can then be stored for community use in future winters.
