New Hullabaloo music classes planned for August

Many mums, dads and grandparents will already be familiar with Hullabaloo – Fun With Music!. It’s a Pre-school music and movement class that’s run by a local mum, Charlotte McMillan.

Classes are already held in Pencaitland and Haddington, but there are plans to provide more classes this August in time for the new school year.

As Charlotte explains, “Both drop-in sessions and bookable blocks of classes are on offer, and everyone gets the chance to try it out for free, so you’ve nothing to lose. Children from as young as a few weeks can come along and it’s a great chance to meet other children and their parents. So please come and have a sing-along with me, my guitar, my instruments and my friends. It’s usually good fun and a great social thing in which to get involved.”

New Fraser Centre plans community open day 9th June

The Fraser Centre, formerly the Winton Cinema in Tranent, is being given a new lease of life as a learning, development, arts and entertainment centre.

The former Winton Cinema will now be a community trust backed venue.

Set up as a community trust, the intention is to be able to offer the former cinema to various community groups as a venue for holding educational, arts and entertainment activities. The aim is to include conferences, training projects, concerts, as well as a cinema; harking back to the origins of the building.

The Fraser Centre Community Trust (FCCT) was formed in 2011 with the aim of providing an Arts, Learning and Development Centre in Tranent. The 700 seater 1900’s style cinema is in the Fa’side constituency which has around 14,000 residents with varying needs for just such a nearby venue for their communities.

In 2011 a long term lease with the FCCT culminated in the latest revival of this unique venue.

Pencaitland kids put on play about Florence Nightingale

Kids from the local primary school put on an impressive performance of ‘The Lady with the Lamp’ for their parents yesterday, based on the life and ground-breaking work of Florence Nightingale.

Children from the P3 class put on the 30 minute performance detailing how the wealthy family of Florence Nightingale disapproved of her wish to become a nurse. However, this didn’t stop her and she went on to gain fame for her pioneering work in the Crimean War.

Today she is best remembered as a nurse at a time when only women from poor backgrounds would be considered suitable. But it was her statistical research which, through the use of at the time, novel pie charts (see the famous chart here) she was able to prove to Parliament and civil servants that the lack of sanitary conditions was a bigger killer than battle-inflicted injuries.
