First Bus – Commute by bus

This tool is only of use if you are making a decision whether to commute by car or by bus.

Ostensibly it makes sense to commute by bus if the financials stack up. Here is what the Firstbus site states:

We’re challenging you to use your head and commute by bus. With a FirstWeek 1 Zone ticket costing £21.50 you can make some great savings.

For example:

  • If you make an 8 mile round trip to commute and pay £4 per day for parking, you’ll save up to £5.45 per week, which equates to £283.40 per year.
  • If you make a longer commute at 16 miles round trip and pay £6 per day for parking, you’ll save up to £22.55 per week, that’s £1172.60 per year.

This information was easy to find, with fuel and parking assumptions given (in the tables the sums include the parking and fuel costs).

If the decision to commute by bus was purely financial, it would be an open and shut case.
