John Muir Birthplace Trust

Visited 17th January. It was closed. Only open 10am til 5pm Wed-Sat and 1-5pm in Winter.

Tourist information signs still point down the High Street, but there is no indication that it is not open – but it is winter.

I popped into JMBT this afternoon again at around 4:15 (18th Jan 2012).

I asked for local bus times as I could not see timetables on display, but also because the foyer was empty and I was immediately engaged by the staff present.

The timetables on offer covered all the relevant local routes and services.

The friendly staff offered a Firstbus timetable for my route to North Berwick (Travel to Haddington then North Berwick) and then pulled out a train timetable. With only a little extra probing the Eve’s timetable was offered. No SD timetables were visible, nor where they offered, but a single copy of the SD Dunbar map was available.

JMBT is council run, so staff seem to be quite happy to keep timetables and make copies of them, as there is a continuing demand. It is not clear whether during peak times of demand whether they could keep on top of this. The staff reported increasing patronage of the facilities, year on year and with the closure of the Local Tourist Office and general economic strictures they must be under additional pressure.
