Cookie Consent

You will know that “cookie consent” buttons now litter the internet and makes it increasingly less usable and friendly. Despite our misgivings about the wisdom of the legislation, in 2012 we updated our terms of service and made available a small plugin to provide all our users  with fine-grained controls to provide consent.

Apart from ourselves, none of our users have ever employed it. We’ve instead opted for a new “implied consent” tool, which we hope makes it easier for all of you to manage and is discrete and less obtrusive for your users.  To try it out, go to Plugins and Activate “UK Cookie Consent”. This creates a new page, which you can tailor as we have done, and forms also the basis to this article.

When should you use it? If you are gathering statistics using Google Analytics, ShareThis or similar, we’d advise you to turn it on.

If you don’t give a cookie, then no worries, otherwise what follows is a short summary of our cookie policies.

OurLocality uses cookies – small text files that are placed on your machine to help the site provide a better user experience. Our privacy policies, part of our terms of service, are detailed here.

In general, cookies are used to retain user preferences, store information for things like a login session, a shopping cart, but can also provide anonymised tracking data to third party applications like Google Analytics, which some of you will use.

As a rule, cookies will make your browsing experience better, but not all websites adhere to this principle and use your browser activity to track your behaviour.

If you employ facebook or share plugins or Google Analytics, we suggest that you may wish to consider warning your users that the site uses cookies as these services can collect data which some of your users may regard infringe privacy.

Users that prefer to disable cookies on this site and on others can disable cookies in their browser. We suggest consulting the Help section of your browser or taking a look at the About Cookies website, which offers guidance for all modern browsers
