Pencaitland’s website is back in action

OurLocality was able to step in and help Pencaitland get it's community site back online after a malware attack East Lothian's excellent edubuzz.org - click to find out more about OurLocalityTHANKS to the good people over at OurLocality.org Pencaitland’s very own community website is back in action and better than before.

A bunch of East Lothian websites, mostly Primary & Secondary schools plus parents’ and community sites such as our own, disappeared recently after a malware attack on edubuzz.org sometime on the 24th of August. It could be a few weeks before edubuzz.org returns, along with the many hosted sites it serves. This is an unfortunate bit of bad luck for the excellent platform which delivers a fantastic solution to quick and easy websites for all of East Lothian’s schools and much more.

Now on OurLocality.org, we’ve recovered all of the information pages and news stories whilst making a few minor changes under the bonnet to try to improve your experience of the site. But if you have any suggestions then fire them off to website@pencaitland.org. We’re all ears.

You’ll also notice we’ve finally got around to updating the masthead with a new image. If you haven’t worked it out, it’s Pencaitland’s Parish Church spire. If you have pictures you think might make a nice replacement (we want to update it a little more often in future) then send them to the same email address.

Local sports clubs needed for Active East Lothian website

A ‘one stop shop’ website for sport in East Lothian is set to launch courtesy of the Healthy Living service in ELC, in partnership with Community Sport Hubs across the county.

Active East Lothian is meant to be the de facto tool for providing club information to the public. It will link all groups, involved in developing sport within their community, in one central place. It’s due to go live next Wednesday at http://www.activeeastlothian.co.uk/, though this is just a holding page at the moment.

The latest East Lothian in Action Newsletter includes a story on plans to launch a new 'one stop shop' website to bring resources and expertise under one umbrella website for all sports clubs in East Lothian. Send in your club's details now.Information on sports within each area will be at a communities’ fingertips including an easy activity search option, up to date news and events and information on community projects. There will also be resources on how to get involved in volunteering and coaching in the community.

The Active East Lothian website will provide resources for club sport on everything from child protection to funding, through its Community Sport Hub pages. All local East Lothian clubs will have access to this facility, provided they are engaged with their local Community Sport Hub.

This will give clubs the chance to share resources and expertise, find templates for administration and governance, create valuable relationships and partnerships between clubs and promote their club within the sporting community. This side of the Active East Lothian site is designed to create stronger, more sustainable and better connected clubs by making club management easier and more streamlined. This, along with their CSH membership, gives valuable club volunteers more time to spend on their sports.

One website for all sports in East Lothian

To create an effective website the Community Sport Hubs have been working to build the membership base, so that all sport clubs are represented — both in the hubs and on the Active East Lothian site. If you are part of a club and would like more information on Community Sport Hubs and how your club can be involved please contact Bengy Barsanti on 01875 619 069 or by email on bbarsanti@eastlothian.gov.uk

Flood warnings today – share your knowledge

There are reports that we can expect more floods on our rural road network in and around East Lothian today. If you spot problems tell others. Here’s how…

If you have to travel today and spot a badly flooded section of road please either tweet details to @pencaitlandcc or to the Pencaitland Facebook page. This way the information will automatically be passed on to others.

e.g.

Twitter: @pencaitlandcc carriageway flooded both lanes on final bend into wester #Pencaitland. #flood #eastlothian

You can use the same text whether sending to Twitter or posting to Facebook or Google+ … whichever is your preferred social tool of choice.

the # symbol is often placed in front of keywords on Twitter in order to help people discover relevant updates. If you have room, by adding #eastlothian and #flood to your message it is more likely to be found by those looking for information on floods in the county. Try to be specific, using, for example, #ormiston or #pencaitland hash tags to help geographically pinpoint where the problem is.

Charity Fashion Show for Sick Kids Foundation

Stephanie Malcolm, from equine and country specialists Horse & Outdoor in Macmerry, is holding a fashion show to raise fund’s for Edinburgh’s Sick Kids.

Stephanie Malcolm, from equine and country specialists Horse & Outdoor in Macmerry, is holding a fashion show to raise fund’s for Edinburgh’s Sick Kids.

Taking place on the 29th June at 7pm, it’s being held at Horse & Outdoor located near Pencaitland at 21A Macmerry Industrial Estate. As well as the fashion show there will also be drinks, nibbles and a raffle.

As Stephanie explains, “We do fashion shows twice a year for various charities. We have always done horse charities but felt that the sick kids would benefit from our support. They are celebrating 20 years so felt it a great opportunity to get involved. We do a lot of non-horsey clothing for women, men and kids, so felt that it was a good way to get new faces in to see what we do and support a great cause as the same time!”

For further details you can contact Stephanie on 01875 824 298 or email Stephanie.Malcolm@horseandoutdoor.co.uk. Tickets for the event cost £5 of which £4 will go to the Sick Kids Friends Foundation. For anyone unsure of the exact location, there’s a handy map on the Horse & Outdoor website.

Pencaitland Rainbow Guides may fold without volunteers

The Pencaitland Rainbow Guide group are looking for volunteers to take over the running of the group. The existing leaders are moving on in a couple of weeks and, without someone new to take it on, the unit will be in danger of folding.

Rainbow Guides is the very first guiding organisation that little girls can join, and is for 5-7 year olds to attend before going on to Brownies. It is great fun for the girls and is a good way for them to get a bit of independence and social interaction away from nursery or school.

If you think you could help please register your interest via the guiding website. If you know others who may be interested in volunteering please pass this information on.

New Fraser Centre plans community open day 9th June

The Fraser Centre, formerly the Winton Cinema in Tranent, is being given a new lease of life as a learning, development, arts and entertainment centre.

The former Winton Cinema will now be a community trust backed venue.

Set up as a community trust, the intention is to be able to offer the former cinema to various community groups as a venue for holding educational, arts and entertainment activities. The aim is to include conferences, training projects, concerts, as well as a cinema; harking back to the origins of the building.

The Fraser Centre Community Trust (FCCT) was formed in 2011 with the aim of providing an Arts, Learning and Development Centre in Tranent. The 700 seater 1900’s style cinema is in the Fa’side constituency which has around 14,000 residents with varying needs for just such a nearby venue for their communities.

In 2011 a long term lease with the FCCT culminated in the latest revival of this unique venue.

For further information on activities planned at the centre visit the website.
