Subsidies

Here’s what my dictionary says about subsidies

Subsidy (pl Subsidies)

1. A sum of money granted from public funds to help an industry or business keep the price of a product or service low.

2. A sum of money granted to support an undertaking that is considered to be in the public interest. Origin, Latin subsidium “assistance”.

There is a lot of talk about subsidies for wind turbines. There is also a lot of talk about subsidies for coal, gas and nuclear power.

Subsidies come from the pockets of the people through direct and indirect taxation. The energy industry is so global that the issue is bigger than Dunbar Community Energy have the time to deal with.

We accept that our energy project will rely on subsidies, and accept that we can spend the money in our local community. Our community hosts dozens of wind turbines and Torness nuclear power station. We accept that we can have some of the money back.
