We received a note from Lynn Fraser, reproduced below, about a small tribute to Daz Hack to be found on the Pencaitland railway walk.

“Emma has been overwhelmed by the support and help she has received from people in the village (and who still continue to give that support) to make last Monday and Daz’s after-party a beautiful thing. It had all the touches he had requested to help us to celebrate his life.

Ken Hack, Daz’s dad, left Pencaitland bowling club early on Monday with Lisa, Daz’s sister, to take up the picture box artwork he had lovingly made and place it on the railway walk. Daz so loved it there.

It’s tied to a tree not far from the bridge, between Lempockwells Steadings heading towards West Saltoun.

Please can you post up the photo on the Pencaitland community site to let people know so they can stop and enjoy Ken’s tribute to his son.”

RELBUS launches consultation on East Lothian bus priorities

RELBUS is seeking bus user views on its campaign priorities
RELBUS is seeking bus user views on its campaign priorities
RELBUS, the group that campaigns for better rural buses in East Lothian, has launched a member consultation to help prioritise its campaigning objectives.

The nine point plan covers basic standards that should be expected for bus service information including bus stops; fairer fares; plainer ticketing, improved timetabling, better connecting services, and perhaps most importantly, decent complaints procedures.

If you are a bus user it’s your opportunity to have your views fed back into the way RELBUS is campaigning on your behalf. Becoming a member of RELBUS is free and open to anyone living in or travelling to and from East Lothian.

RELBUS aims to campaign to improve accessibility for all and seeks better promotion of buses as a viable and acceptable form of transport, rather than an option of last resort. RELBUS believes that the Council and bus companies servicing East Lothian can do more and that good consultation procedures could help to map out a far better future for rural bus users across the county. That’s also why RELBUS recently welcomed the creation of a Local Bus forum by East Lothian Councillor Michael Veitch.

Barry Turner, Chair of RELBUS said: “We are looking forward to developing a constructive dialogue with operators, East Lothian Council and Community Councils. For too long bus travel in rural areas has been seen as a last resort, rather than the preferred mode of transport. We’ve identified a good number of supply measures that could help increase demand, even in the current deregulated market. We will continue to work with others to identify novel means of supplementing rural bus services in order to meet a wider range of local needs”.

Taking part in the consultation

To have your say simply go to the RELBUS Consultation Questions and, if you have a view, leave your comment in the text box at the bottom of the page. In all there are nine consultation questions. This is notionally intended for existing members of RELBUS. Fortunately joining is free and takes no time to do. If you rely on buses in East Lothian it’s in your interests to join.

For more information visit the RELBUS website.

Background: What is RELBUS?

RELBUS (Rural East Lothian Bus Users) is a volunteer-led group set up to campaign for better rural transport in East Lothian. RELBUS is a membership organisation, which is free. It holds public forums, meetings with operators and has an ongoing dialogue with local politicians of all parties and the local authority. A thanks from Lollipop man Bill’s daughter

Bill Wise

The Community Council received a card from local Lollipop man Bill’s daughter Carol, thanking the community of Pencaitland for their recent support.

It reads:

“I’m writing on behalf of Bill Wise’s family and the overwhelming response from Pencaitland.

This has been a tremendous support to us knowing that our beloved Dad also meant so much to many others. Please pass on our thanks.

My Dad used to say ‘who would be bothered when I pass away’? He would be surprised by ‘all the fuss’ for him.”

Pencaitland Community falls short of full Council – Seeks new Reps

A recent letter in the East Lothian Courier laments the lack of locals stepping up to look out for their local area. Click to read.
A letter in the Courier laments lack of locals stepping up. Click to read.
Nominations recently closed for the twenty community councils within East Lothian. Most will return with no need for elections.

This has been the picture in the Pencaitland Community Council area for many years, with no elections ever having taken place for seats in this ward.

In all there are fifteen seats on Pencaitland’s Community Council with twelve taken up for the next session. Sadly, this means that we are under-represented.

We really want local representation for other parts of this ward including Peastonbank/Glenkinchie, New Winton, Boggs Holdings, Fountainhall and everywhere in-between. Equally, for a rural area we have no-one from the farming community nor anyone in their teens or 20s. Did you know you can be 16 and sit on the Community Council?

Pencaitland Community Council Area MapWe are searching for new blood to join the team. We need more voices on issues which directly affect you and your local environment. If you care about local matters then take the next step – come along to your local community council and see if you’d like to become a co-opted member.

Interested? Next Steps

Want to know more? Contact the current Community Council Chair, Ralph Averbuch, on 01875 340 641 or 07920 094 923 to discuss how you can get involved. Or you can email chair@pencaitland.org.

This is your chance to represent your local community and directly affect the way it develops in the future. Come along and be part of the team.

Pencaitland Community seeks council secretary

Nicky Neighbour steps down after many years, as both a Community Councillor and in the last year as Secretary, on the 4th of October.
Nicky Neighbour steps down after many years, as both a Community Councillor and in the last year as Secretary, on the 4th of October.
Pencaitland Community Council, which covers Boggs Holdings, New Winton and Peastonbank/Glenkinchie, is seeking a person to take on the role of Community Council Secretary. The post includes a modest financial allowance.

Pencaitland Community Council represents the local community, seeking to liaise with other local bodies and East Lothian Council. This includes ten Community Council meetings a year which usually take place on the last Wednesday evening of the month.

The role involves minuting the Community Council’s ten meetings and managing and re-distributing correspondence. This is increasingly delivered via email. You can see a recent example of the Community Council’s minutes here.

In the last year the Community Council has made much greater use of the web and social media to update the local population of news and events. As well as this website, the Community Council can be found on both Facebook and Twitter. Whilst not part of the post, training will be given to any Secretary interested in this area.

If you would like to know more about what’s involved please contact the current Secretary Nicky Neighbour. Nicky steps down on the 4th of October but would be delighted to tell those interested in the post about what’s involved. She can be contacted on 01875 340 115 or by emailing secretary@pencaitland.org.

Thanks

And finally, we’d like to say a big thank you to Nicky for her many years of involvement both as a community council member and, in the last year, as our Secretary. She will be sorely missed.

Following the service, Emma invites everyone to Pencaitland Bowling Club for Daz’s After Party and refreshments.

There will be a Memory Book available at both the Crematorium and the Bowling Club for you to write a message to Emma, Aimee, Olly and family.

Daz Hack: Request

Daz chose an eco-friendly cardboard coffin and asked for everyone to have a chance to either write a message or draw a picture on it. You can do so today, Friday, until 4pm, or tomorrow, Saturday, between 9am and 5pm, at the Co-operative Funeral Care, 96-98 High Street, Tranent.

Please try and make the time to do this over the next two days, as it was one of Daz’s last wishes.

Bill Wise’s sad death is reported in this week’s East Lothian Courier. Click to read the story
Bill Wise’s funeral took place yesterday at Ormiston Parish Church with Minister David Torrance taking the service.

If an indication were needed of how well liked Bill was, then the packed church, with people standing in every available space, spoke volumes.

A number of Pencaitlanders made it along to pay their respects as well as Bill’s large family and many friends from Ormiston, where he lived most of his life.
