The fire at Valencia Waste Management’s Dunbar Landfill Site has been extinguished.
The fire, which had been burning since Monday, has produced a large amount of smoke which has covered parts of Dunbar, Innerwick and the surrounding areas.
Fire crew have regularly visited the site this week and Valencia has now confirmed that the fire is out.

A full investigation will be carried out into what caused the fire.
A spokesperson for Valencia said: “Valencia Waste Management confirms that the surface fire at the Dunbar landfill site has been extinguished this afternoon.
“Valencia’s team will remain onsite over the weekend to monitor the scene and ensure any smoldering is managed.
“We will now start the investigation into the cause of the fire and work with the fire service and SEPA. Valencia will share results of the investigation with the local community.”

Paul McLennan, East Lothian MSP, said: “I have met with Valencia Waste Management and SEPA, who indicated that there was no toxicity in the smoke.
“Subsequent to this I have arranged a public meeting with Valencia and SEPA, which I will chair, to discuss the incident further, community councils and members the public will be welcome to attend, and I will circulate dates and details soon.
“I would like to express my gratitude to all the services involved in managing this incident and to the community for their resilience during this time.

Craig Hoy, South Scotland MSP, added: “The fire at the Dunbar Landfill site is rightly a matter of significant local concern and there is a pressing need for Valencia Waste Management to be open about fire safety concerns at the site.
“I have written to the company to request an urgent meeting to ensure that the site is fit-for-purpose and that residents’ concerns are properly addressed.
“I have also engaged the Scottish Fire service, the local authority and SEPA on this matter and will continue to press for answers and explanations.”
