Battery recycling warning?

Published Categorised as Updates

Apparently some councils are ramping up communications to try and reduce the number of fires caused by batteries in residual waste.

Let’s Recycle reports that the number of fires caused by batteries has been rising and a survey by Material Focus last year found that there were over 700 battery-related fires in the waste and recycling system across the UK.

Batteries that have not been removed from unwanted electricals cause more than 700 fires annually in recycling facilities.

Over Christmas, the issue is even more prevalent, or so it seems, as old or broken toys and gadgets are dicarded to make way for new ones.

Some, but not all local authorities have also been trying persuade residents and raise awareness of the issue.
