Climate Change – what does the IPCC’s “Global Warming of 1.5°C” Report mean?
In November 2015, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) adopted the “Paris Agreement”, whose goal is to limit global warming to “well below 2°C” above pre-industrial levels and to “pursue efforts to” limit warming to 1.5°C. In October 2018, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) produced a special report about the 1.5°C target. The report discusses the impacts of 1.5°C warming, and what we need to do to limit warming to 1.5°C. The required transformations to society are monumental, improbable, and may well be impossible. The consequences of failing to limit warming are dire. In this talk I will give a quick overview of this existential crisis, the underlying science and uncertainties, try to find some points of optimism, and attempt to answer any questions.
All very welcome, whether a member of Sustaining Dunbar or not. Come for all or part of the evening. Free event.
