New Waste Innovation Centre wins Scottish Government backing!

Sustaining Dunbar’s drive to create a more sustainable community got a massive cash boost last week with a £147,000 award from the Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge Fund to create a new Waste Innovation Centre.

The grant, the only one to a group in East Lothian, will be invested in our new project – the Dunbar Waste Innovation Centre. The new Centre will build on the hugely popular Zero Waste Dunbar project which stops goods from going to landfill and redistributes them to the community, including for sale through the shop on Spott Road.

Elisabeth Wilson, chair of Sustaining Dunbar, welcomed the news:

“This is a tribute to local people and organisations who have supported the aims and activities of Sustaining Dunbar in pushing forward Dunbar as Scotland’s first Zero Waste Town.  It’s also a tribute to the hard work of our fantastic staff team and many, many volunteers who have helped make this happen. With this funding we will be able to transform the way our community sees waste and create a vital resource for the town and local area.”

Simon Glover, Business Development Officer with Sustaining Dunbar and project lead said:

“The Waste Innovation Centre will develop innovative and creative uses for currently “worthless” waste materials. The opportunities to create local jobs and products from waste are substantial. With your support we can make this facility a hub for entreprenuerial and community spirit, skill sharing, and fun.”

The project will address a significant gap in local provision for reuse and repair, nurture the development of a more circular local economy and significantly reduce waste to landfill whilst providing local opportunities for jobs, skills, training, innovation and incubation of new enterprises.
