{"id":1578,"date":"2015-08-12T15:19:33","date_gmt":"2015-08-12T14:19:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dunbarcastlesocialclub.org.uk\/?page_id=1578"},"modified":"2024-09-28T08:42:30","modified_gmt":"2024-09-28T07:42:30","slug":"lodge-premises","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/thelodgeofdunbarcastle\/lodge-premises\/","title":{"rendered":"Lodge Premises"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Lodge Room<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/thelodgeofdunbarcastle\/files\/2015\/08\/Exterior.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"267\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/dunbarcastlesocialclub.org.uk\/files\/2015\/08\/Exterior-267x300.jpg\" alt=\"Exterior\" class=\"wp-image-1588\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/thelodgeofdunbarcastle\/files\/2015\/08\/Exterior-267x300.jpg 267w, https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/thelodgeofdunbarcastle\/files\/2015\/08\/Exterior.jpg 393w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The location of the Lodge Room in Dunbar (<em>mentioned in previous chapters<\/em>) can be summarised thus:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1758 \u2013 1798\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Unknown<br> <strong>1798 \u2013 1865\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 The Hall above The Town Reservoir, [on the site currently occupied by G.Spratt &amp; Co.\u00a0 3\u00a0 Abbeylands the High Street].<br> <strong>1865 \u2013 1872\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 The Supper Room of The Assembly Rooms in Church Street.<br> <strong>1872 \u2013 1883<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0St. Catherine\u2019s Hall Lamer Street.<br> <strong>1883 1930<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 The Hall above the Town Clerk\u2019s Office (the reconstructed Reservoir Building).<br> <strong>1930 \u2013 1958<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 The Hall and former Town Clerk\u2019s Office \u2013 the whole premises purchased and reconstructed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>In 1980 the premises were sold and The Lodge moved to the location on Belhaven Road.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The appearance of the interior of the early Lodge is not known, but some ideas may be gained from items in accounts, and the following extracts help to construct at least some kind of picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>20<sup>th<\/sup> December 1811.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>For painting Lodge Room and staircase.<br> 3 Coats Crimson Colour on walls finished in oil.<br> 2 Coats White on doors and windows finished in oil.<br> Crimson size Colour on walls of Stair Case and Stewards Room.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From time to time alterations, renovations and re-decoration were carried out. It is clear from bills that there was a Stewards Room and an outside staircase and room below it. In 1818, a Committee met and decided to alter the position of the stair to enter from the West. The Lodge Room was lit first by candles \u2013 there are a number of items in the Stewards Book for the purchase of both \u201cmould\u201d and \u201cdipt\u201d candles and also candlesticks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is one entry from the Stewards Book :-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dec. 10. 1811.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>2 pairs Snuffers \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 2 \u2013 0<br> 8 mould Candles \u00a0 \u00a0 1 \u2013 8<br> 1 lb. Dipt. Do. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 1 \u2013 0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another entry reads\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cAprile 6. 1803. \u00a0To paid Archibald Aitken for new besom 2\/- \u201c<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was heated by a coal fire, removed only in 1936, along with the Adams mantelpiece. An early bill for coal is <em>\u201cFeb. 5. 1805. 1 boll of briggness coals and carriage. \u201c<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0 (Briggness is a small harbour near Carriden, West Lothian). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later there would be oil lamps to give light, and then gas was installed in 1836, as has been related.
