The research interests of the Mansell group focus on harnessing main group and transition metal chemistry in unison in order to develop better catalysts. Specific targets include hydrogen transfer and hydrogen-borrowing processes, as well as C–H bond activation. He obtained his MSci degree from Imperial College London in 2005 and his PhD from The University of Bristol in 2009. After post-doctoral work in boron chemistry and small molecule activation mediated by organometallic complexes of uranium, he started his current position in 2013.

Career history
Assistant Professor, Heriot-Watt University, from September 2013
Post-doctoral research associate, The University of Bath, 2013
Post-doctoral research fellow, The University of Edinburgh, 2010-2013
Post-doctoral research assistant, The University of Bristol, 2009-2010
PhD, The University of Bristol, 2005-2009
MSci in Chemistry, Imperial College London, 2001-2005

Research and Outreach Presentations
15 Nov 2023 Invited seminar at the University of Lancaster.
14 Nov 2023 Invited lecture at the RSC Northwest Local section, UCLAN, Preston.
22 Mar 2023 Invited seminar at the University of Glasgow.
15 Mar 2023 From Alchemy to Chemistry and Beyond presentation for a special 50 Years of Chemistry at Heriot-Watt Riccarton Campus event.
26 Oct 2022 Chemistry and Climate Change: Perspectives on Decarbonisation Outreach Event, Summerhall, Newington.
22 Jun 2022 RSC Perkin conference presentation University of Glasgow.
2017 – 2021 Visited or gave virtual presentations at 11 schools.
10 Dec 2021 Chemistry and Climate Change Event, Heriot-Watt University.
9 Dec 2020 Invited online seminar at the University of Bath.
23 Nov 2019 Public lecture at the Royal Society of Edinburgh (http://tiny.cc/rr7acz)
10 Sep 2019 Special outreach lecture for the International Year of the Periodic Table entitled A Periodic Tale: 150 years and still up to date (https://rsc.li/2yTATqt).
23 Nov 2018 Awarded RSC funding to give outreach talks at Andersen High School, Shetlands.
31 Oct 2018 Invited seminar at the University of Sussex.
31 Jul 2018 Presentation on Applying 2-Phosphinophosphinine Ligands to Catalysis at the ICCC 2018 in Sendai, Japan.
16 Jul 2018 Presentation on Applying Unconventional Ligands to Catalysis at LIKAT in Rostock, Germany.
19 Jun 2018 Presentation on Applying 2-Phosphinophosphinine Ligands to Catalysis at the UK Catalysis Hub summer conference.
4 Apr 2018 Presentation on Applying Phosphinophosphinine Ligands to Catalysis at Dalton 2018 joint meeting of the interests groups.
14 Mar 2018 Invited seminar at the University of Oxford.
14 Jun 2017 Invited seminar at the University of York.
8 May 2017 Poster Presentation at the Royal Society, London, at a meeting on Sustainable Catalysis.
4 Sep 2016 Presentation at MICRA 2016, held at The University of Bath.
30 Mar 2016 Presentation at the Dalton Joint Interest Meeting at The University of Warwick.
10 Sep 2014 Presentation on Developing unconventional ligands for new reactivity at MICRA 2014 meeting which is the Meeting for Inorganic Chemists Recently Appointed.
15 Apr 2014 Presentation on N-heterocyclic stannylenes at Dalton 2014 joint meeting of the interests groups.
19 Mar 2014 Presentation on Unconventional ligands: Developing the coordination chemistry of N-heterocyclic stannylenes to ca. 180 at the Scottish Regional Dalton Meeting at The University of St. Andrews.

Stephen Mansell is an Assistant Professor in the Institute of Chemical Sciences at Heriot-Watt University.
