{"id":7555,"date":"2023-06-12T14:25:25","date_gmt":"2023-06-12T13:25:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eastlammermuircommunitycouncil.org.uk\/?p=7555"},"modified":"2025-11-02T11:47:01","modified_gmt":"2025-11-02T11:47:01","slug":"torness-power-station","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/elwoc\/2023\/06\/torness-power-station\/","title":{"rendered":"Torness Power Station"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-3e41869c wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"#latest_torness_news\">Latest Torness news<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>EDF\u2019s Torness has one of the best rates of generation per annum in the fleet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the 35th year of generation &#8211; remain a strong generator and integral part of East Lothian<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Over its generating life, Torness has produced almost as much zero-carbon energy as Hunterston B did in its 46 years: equivalent to powering every home in Scotland for 29 years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Torness supports around 500 staff and 250 contractors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each year Torness contributes around \u00a345m to the East Lothian economy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>During scheduled maintenance periods, that workforce is larger with an additional 800 contractors visiting site \u2013 these shutdowns are known as an outage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While supporting this work these contractors boost the local economy, staying in local hotels and B&amp;Bs and using other local services like taxis and restaurants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This is something that has been happening throughout the 35-year life of the station but we are conscious that alongside the increasing volume of projects in the area there may be an added strain on local suppliers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2023 is a non-outage year, our next stat outage is March 2024 and then July 2025<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Defueling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Torness is currently due to end generation in March 2028<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Defueling begins when a station stops generating. EDF will remove all spent fuel from the site using the same methods used during generation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Defueling is expected to last for approx. four years \u2013 during this time staff numbers onsite will remain largely the same and there will be no change to the site\u2019s footprint.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Decommissioning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Once all spent fuel has been removed, site ownership will be transferred, to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).
