Issues are passed to East Lothian Council for action or we manage issues ourselves as small projects &#8211; like painting railings or making dangerous steps more visible in the dark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/image-1-1024x768.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/image-1-1024x768.png 1024w, https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/image-1-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/image-1-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/image-1.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>East Beach is a challenge but our hard work to keep it clear of litter and to develop and maintain the seating areas have meant that it has qualified for a <strong>Rural Seaside Award <\/strong>every year since 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/image-11-1024x768.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/image-11-1024x768.png 1024w, https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/image-11-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/image-11-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/image-11.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We delivered a major feasibility study in  2012 to see if we could build the <strong>Coastlife Centre<\/strong>,  a &#8216;virtual aquarium&#8217; and immersive cinema built on derelict ground at East Beach.  The trial was a huge success but we were ultimately unable to buy the site due to a mismatch between grants and the price the owner wanted for his land.  At least we tried and everybody had a wonderful weekend, thanks to Igloovision!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/IMG_0539.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1206 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/IMG_0539.jpg 480w, https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/IMG_0539-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>In 2012, we started a project to restore the <strong>Fishermen&#8217;s Monument<\/strong> at Cromwell Harbour.  We raised the money for a major study by conservator Graciela Ainsworth and the work was completed in 2013.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We still raise money each year for annual applications of lime wash to keep the monument as safe as possible from the continuing erosive impacts of the North Sea.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/image-6-1024x768.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1196\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/image-6-1024x768.png 1024w, https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/image-6-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/image-6-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/image-6.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2014, we designed and raised the money for the construction of <strong>Dr Badger&#8217;s Bench<\/strong> at Dunbar Harbour.  This is entirely accessible by wheelchair and buggy and has proved a really popular lookout for visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"342\" height=\"178\" src=\"https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/Site-lobster-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1205 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/Site-lobster-2.png 342w, https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/Site-lobster-2-300x156.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 342px) 100vw, 342px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>In 2014, we raised the money to have a derelict &#8216;dog toilet&#8217; patch at Cromwell Harbour replaced with huge cobbles from Victoria Harbour and we incorporated a lovely <strong>lobster<\/strong> carved into the stone by Gardner Molloy.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/image-7-1024x768.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/image-7-1024x768.png 1024w, https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/image-7-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/image-7-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/image-7.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2015, after a series of catastrophic storms, the East Beach was lost to the sea and we began work with East Lothian Council to determine ways in which the <strong>East Beach<\/strong> might be naturally <strong>regenerated<\/strong>.  Rock armour at the interceptor pipes was installed in 2019 and two breakwaters and a new &#8216;Biowall&#8217; groyne were built in 2020, with the works juggled around Covid restrictions.  The new works allowed the beach to naturally rebuild over the next 3 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/image-8-1024x768.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/image-8-1024x768.png 1024w, https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/image-8-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/image-8-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/dunbarshoreandharbour\/files\/2026\/04\/image-8.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, we worked with East Lothian Council, Royal Haskoning DHV and OOBE Design to consider how new <strong>East Beach Sea Defences<\/strong> might deliver not only a secure sea wall but also a visitor attraction. The site was previously occupied by a &#8216;pay as you pee&#8217; self cleaning toilet that didn&#8217;t last long! Our long standing member, Kenny Maule, has done wonderful panels for the whole harbour and this suite of 10 panels + map have proved a great attraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has been a busy old decade!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 2021, we celebrated 10 years of working together.
