Dunbar Xmas lights switch on!

Dunbar has the most wonderful christmas lights that bring cheer for the whole festive season. They will be switched on this sunday 17th November.

There will be stalls on the high street to help you get started on your xmas shoppings. There will be some shops and cafes open, so we can browse and then warm up inside with hot drinks and a bite to eat!

The Crunchy Carrot will have a wee Fairtrade nibble as a free taster and you can pick up Fairtrade leaflets also , if you wish to find out more information about the Fairtrade campaign.

Fairtrade Talk

Fairtrade Talk To Belhaven 1st Guides – Wednesday 11th sep 2013

Jo (from the Dunbar Fairtrade group) was asked to give a talk to the Belhaven 1st Guides on the theme of chocolate and Fairtrade. This talk was to help them towards achieving one of their two chocolate badges.

The talk included information about the history of cocoa and the growing of the cocoa pods, and then it moved on to learn more about the farmers of cocoa, in West Africa in particular. Some of the difficulties the farmers face was then discussed and how the Fairtrade organisations help them towards a fairer and safer working life.

The information adapted for the talk came from the Fairtrade Foundation research papers from their website. A great resource for all things Fairtrade.

Renewal Successful!

Renewal Success!

Dunbar Fairtrade Group applied for a further two years of Fairtrade Town Status and after a wait of six or seven weeks received the news that the application had been successful. This is a great achievement for the Dunbar Group, the Town and ultimately for the Fairtrade cause.

The application entailed creating a 2-year action plan outlining in detail what events; activities and awareness raising would be planned and completed over that time. It also involved showing evidence for all the past years accomplishments, which have to sufficiently meet the criteria of the application.

The group received the new Town Status certificate through the post only a couple of days ago with an accompanying letter (see both below) providing feedback and praise for the Town and groups achievements and efforts. Well done to all our members and supporters and the whole community for doing so much and caring about the issues.

Dunbar Fairtrade Partnership

Dunbar has been a Fairtrade Town for nearly one year now and our Primary school has just received Fairtrade school status.

The Dunbar Fairtrade group has been together for over two years, helping to raise awareness of Fairtrade issues and promote the use of Fairtrade goods.

‘Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices, Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.’

We are looking to encourage more people to join our group, to come along to our meetings (3 to 4 per year) or to join our emailing list to keep up with our events and activities and be able to join in or come along when possible.

If you would like to join in or come along our next meeting is,

Tuesday 3 Sept, 7pm, at the Be Green office, West Port, Dunbar

or to be on our emailing list please contact Jo at jopoet@btinternet.com

Dunbar Lifeboat Day

Lifeboat Day on 20th July was a terrific event, sunshine all day and evening, non stop people enjoying the many stalls, activities and demonstrations. It truly was a magnificent outing for the whole community.

Dunbar’s Fairtrade group had an information stall to help spread the word about Fairtrade issues and further celebrate not only Dunbar’s Fairtrade Town award but Dunbar Primary school’s achievement of Fairtrade school status.

It further highlights the whole communitys knowledge of and commitment to the Fairtrade cause, helping farmers and producers in developing countries get fair treatment for their goods, safer working conditions and help avoiding extreme poverty.

Well done to all helpers and supporters for the Fairtrade stall and the Lifeboat Day.IMG_1001
