Loft insulation was the most widely adopted measure<\/p><\/div>\n

This section outlines our estimates of the actual reductions brought about by the changes the project has made, through the Energy Advice Service. We also reflect on what we have learned since we made our original assumptions, and how the project has changed awareness about CO2 <\/sub>in the community.<\/p>\n

Our Energy Audit Team have completed full audits and provided follow up assistance to over 400 households to date.<\/p>\n

All households that have received a full energy audit were sent a feedback questionnaire in Autumn 2010. There was a response rate of over 20%. These responses were mapped by postcode and had a very good geographic spread across the ward and across house types so we are confident they are a representative sample. See map here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The responses were overwhelmingly positive and most had made some changes as a result of the audit.<\/p>\n

On average, the \u2018hard\u2019 measures installed (ranging from draughtstripping to insulation, secondary glazing, replacement of inefficient appliances, the installation of an air-source heat pump and the installation of PVs) amounted to predicted savings of just over 13% on energy consumption (EST figures).

\nMost households had also made some \u2018no-cost\u2019 behaviour changes, estimated to give at least 5% savings on average.<\/p>\n

Average emissions per household are approx. 6 tCO2<\/sub>e\/year, therefore direct savings from energy audits to date assuming an average of 18% savings per household are approx. 400 x 6 x 0.18 tCO2<\/sub>e\/year = 432 tCO2<\/sub>e. More importantly, the energy audits have given households the information they require to make future, much larger carbon savings once obstacles, particularly of finance, have been removed.<\/p>\n


\nWe also have anecdotal evidence that there has been a spin off effect, with friends and neighbours of those households receiving an energy audit, also taking some energy saving measures. However, we have no data to quantify this.<\/p>\n

Fifteen \u2018Neighbourhood Energy Assistants\u2019 were also trained and carried out basic home energy awareness interviews with their friends and neighbours.<\/p>\n

These interviews take from 40 minutes to an hour and include advice on \u2018no-cost\u2019 energy saving measures. We expect them to carry out more than 300 interviews before the end of March 2011. We expect these interviews to bring about some behaviour change, possibly amounting to up to 5% annual savings. If correct, the savings from this would amount to about 300 \u00d7 0.05 \u00d7 6 = 90 \u00a0tCO2<\/sub>e.<\/p>\n

We therefore estimate that emissions savings arising directly from the energy audit project amount to about 432 + 90 = 522 tCO2<\/sub>e\/year to date.<\/p>\n

In addition, the energy audit team has supported the running of the BeGreen, drop-in energy advice shop which has provided advice to several hundred more clients who have, for various reasons, not wanted or required a full audit. The work of the BeGreen project has included promotion of two \u2018Hotspot\u2019 insulation campaigns with 627 referrals for cavity wall and\/or loft top-ups, converting to about 240 installations.\u00a0The Energy Saving Scotland Advice Centre estimates that about 246tCO2e\/year emission savings have resulted from referrals from the BeGreen project over the past two years.<\/p>\n

The BeGreen project also administers a community benefit fund from a local wind farm which gives grants for energy efficiency measures\u00a0to people in receipt of a qualifying benefit and to those aged 65+, according to recommendations made by the energy audit team.
