Twig World came to film how we learn about C02

Twig World is well known for producing education films to assist learning in schools. They came to Dunbar to make a film about how we learn about climate change and CO2 emissions through the support for learning offered by Sustaining Dunbar. This film is being made to help train teachers and will be available by spring 2015.

Exciting News!

Young scotDunbar Primary School’s Ecology Umbrella Group are invited to the Youth Discussion competition awards

A few months back we entered Scotland’s Environment Web Youth Discussion competition.

Now we have been invited to the competition Awards Ceremony which is being held on Tuesday 17th June 2014 from 10am – 3.30pm at Our Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh. The event will not only celebrate the success of the winners, but will also recognise the effort put in by all entrants and the help given by teachers, parents and carers.   The schedule for the day  includes fun workshops, lunch, a chance to take part in an interactive question and answer session and the presentation of prizes by Paul Wheelhouse MSP, Minister for Environment & Climate Change.

On the day, we will have the opportunity to view all the entries  and be one of the first to find out who has won as the winners are announced.

Preview the entries

You can now view our entry online by visiting www.youngreporters.org.uk.  From here, you can browse using the map or list view and then click on an entry to find out more about it  and the inspiration behind it. What a great day we had!!!

Eco Super Hero Day. We also had the WWF Pass the Panda and appeared on the World Widlife Foundation website!

Well done everyone who dressed up to celebrate our Green Flag Award and switched off to say “no to co2 emissions” at  Earth Hour 2014.

Earth Hour 2014

imgresEvery year, thousands of people in Scotland joined millions around the world in a huge, symbolic show of support for action by switching off their lights to say no to C02 emissions causing global warming and climate change.

A couple of years ago Dunbar Primary School played a big part in East Lothian having more people sign up to Earth Hour than anywhere else in Britain!!!

This year we are aiming to do it again!

Earth Hour

Earth Hour is a campaign which people get involved in all over the world to show they care about our world and to say

NO to C02 emissions!

Earth Hour isn’t about  just 1 hour!

Green FlagDunbar Primary School has recently been awarded their Green Flag and our action plans include many  things we can do to reduce our C02 emissions related to our energy use, where we get our food from and how we travel around.

Our school has taken lots of action to reduce our C02 emissions. Our P7’s have been taking the Household Canny Challenge to reduce their C02 emissions at home and our school has a Junior Climate Challenge Steering Group.

Our school has received support and funding from Sustaining Dunbar to help us reduce our C02 emissions at school and home such as:

  • Building raised beds, bottle green house and soon a chicken coop:  to produce more of our food (the food we eat travels hundreds of miles and the lorries and planes use a lot of fuel which creates C02 emissions);
  • Providing worm boxes and ways to reduce and reuse food waste:  by reducing food waste we transport food less and by reusing food waste we can grow more food in rich soil;
  • Helping us to walk and cycle more and finding ways to use the car less : cars use petrol and petrol makes C02 emissions;
  • Helping us to reduce our energy usage at school and home : lights out – using less energy generated by coal, oil and gas = less C02 emissions.

Here is a video to get us inspired about Earth Hour 2014

Super Hero’s!!!

On March 28th we are all coming to school dressed as a super hero!

Here is your challenge should you choose to accept it: Dress up as a super hero – but not any super hero – we are talking – Super Cyclist, Super Spud, Super light bulb….get the idea?

Here is your reward: Winning class with most super hero’s get to hoist our schools Green Flag at a big celebration day and we will be helping our planet – what more do we want!

Green Flag Award Update!!!

Green FlagWe have been awarded our Green Flag Award based upon all the hard work we have done over the last couple of years. The Assessors were “blown away” and very impressed with the actions we have carried out and plan to do related to Litter, Food and the Environment and Travel. They also praised us for our Ecology Notice Boards (in both campuses and  on our website) as well as the strong linkages with our curriculum and community.

The Assessors will be sending us a letter listing everything they observed and we will post this letter here 🙂

Well done Dunbar Primary School!!!

Green Flag Inspection :-)

Green FlagToday we had 2 people come to visit us from Keep Scotland Beautiful. They were here to meet with our Umbrella Team and the school forum to decide if we will be awarded a Green Flag Award! All our toes and fingers are crossed 🙂
