Think Before You Chop … it could cost you dear

Trees within Conservation Areas are protected by legislation, ensuring the preservation of our natural, historical and cultural heritage.

Apparently, and I never knew this, it is an offence to fell, lop, top, or carry out any work on trees within a Conservation Area without permission.

Conviction of an offence could result in a fine of up to £20,000.

Moreover you must notify the Council in writing six weeks in advance.

To check if a tree is within a Conservation Area, please refer to the maps of East Lothian’s Conservation Areas or contact ELC.
