We started out with interested families that had children attending Dunbar Grammar School or Dunbar Primary School. We are now pleased to be able to open the waiting list to the general public.

Anyone with an interest in learning how to keep hens is invited to apply. Responsibilities include one duty a week (morning or evening) and cleaning out the coop once every 14 weeks.

A contribution of £5 per month is requested to cover feed costs and make the coop sustainable. In return members get to learn how to care for hens without the costs and responsibility of setting up at home. Most importantly members also get a share of the delicious eggs produced (usually 4-5 eggs per visit).

If this is something you may be interested in please get in touch!

In addition to the weekend work party dates The Ridge Group will be identifying dates for work parties to take place on week days. Anyone who wishes to suggest a work party date please do and we will promote the dates and times for you.

No word yet from Beechgrove Gardens – so keep your fingers crossed.

Any additional manpower that might be available would be gratefully received. Refreshments and a hot meal will be provided. The tasks we hope to accomplish are:

Build a “living wall and door” using recycled pallets. It is essential to secure the garden so that tools etc. can be kept on site and antisocial behaviour discouraged

Clear site of remainder of rubbish, large boulders and further flytipping

Weeding, weeding, weeding

Turf one of the large plant beds to provide somewhere for the kids to play.

Build the worm composter

I know this is an optimistic list of tasks to accomplish in one day, it really depends on the number of hands available, weather etc.

If people would like to help us but cannot volunteer time we are also in need of plant pots, fence posts and seeds, etc. Our aim is to recycle where possible and to date this project has had zero budget. We’d love to keep it this way as an example of what can be done with community spirit, recycling, and goodwill!

Thanks again, we hope to see you all soon, and on behalf of the 5 families, thanks again for your support.
