Cycle Friendly Dunbar Project
The project aims to give local people the confidence to cycle more and cycle further by encouraging local businesses and attractions to welcome cyclists. Organisations signed up to the scheme pledge to have secure cycle parking, bike pumps, local maps and puncture repair kits available. It also supports local businesses by advertising their credentials on this website, and encouraging cyclists to visit, and we hope it will inspire touring cyclists on the N76 or John Muir Way to visit Dunbar as they know they will get a warm and sympathetic welcome.
Public ‘Bike Hubs’
The project was inspired by parents at Dunbar Primary School who installed a track pump at the door to the building which is available for public use. Other locations now include • Dunbar Train Station • Bleachingfield Community Centre
Additional Bike Hubs – ‘Cycle Friendly Stops’
In addition we invite local businesses to take the pledge and become a Cycle Friendly Stop. We will provide them with a Cycle Friendly starter pack (subject to demand). The starter pack will help cyclists keep their bike on the go whilst out and about and will be available to passing cycle tourists during business hours. We will also provide a bicycle lock for customers to use during their visit. A Cycle Friendly Stop should strive to provide safe cycle parking. Grants for businesses are available through Cycling Scotland for cycle parking according to their stipulations.
Why become a Cycle Friendly Stop?
Cyclists are a valued customer base that many businesses do not attract. Providing for them will increase the number of repeat visits to your business. Becoming a Cycle Friendly Stop promotes your business as one which values health and environmental factors, helping your business engage with the local community. Your business will be part of the Cycling Friendly Dunbar website and map reaching a wider audience. The website will be a place to show off your services and offers. For example, free cyclist upgrades on certain dishes. It doesn’t cost much to give hungry cyclists some extra tatties.
What is in the starter pack?
Bike Lock, Track Pump, Puncture Repair Kit with tyre levers Basic tools to keep them going.
