Cookie Policy

Yes, OurLocality like most other modern websites uses cookies. Those small text files cutely named cookies are placed on your machine to help the site provide a better user experience.

Beware some sites use them for nefarious purposes, to track your every step in the virtual world, and increasingly beyond. We frown on their indiscriminate use (by affiliate marketing companies) and are ambivalent about their use. E.g. when used in combination with social media, who arguably find it more useful to them than the website owners. Our privacy policies, part of our terms of service, are detailed here, which are always subject to review.

In general, cookies are used to retain user preferences, store information for things like a login session from one minute or day to the next, a shopping cart – annoying to lose the contents if you get distracted, but can also provide anonymised tracking data to third party applications.

You should know that we do let our users employ Google Analytics, though this is for gathering site based statitsics.

More anonymous tracking will be used if you employ WordPress.com stats (via JetPack).

Some of our sites use social media links, which can gather tracking data that may be employed in a way that the user doesn’t fully understand, so we discourage their use.

However this is common place on the web, so we recommend that if you do not want to be tracked either to stop using the internet and your phone or, more realistically and better, to use software, namely browser extensions, that go some way to hiding your tracks.

As a rule, cookies will make your browsing experience better, but not all websites adhere to this principle and use your browser activity to track your behaviour or collect a financial reward for referrals (known as affiliate websites, which are prohibited on our network, along with other advertising).

If you do want to employ facebook or share plugins or use Google Analytics, we strongly recommend that you use a Cookie warning, so that your users are aware and go even further to write your own site specific policies.

Users that prefer a private browsing experience should check https://disconnect.me/, which removes advert clutter and the social media noise that fouls up your day.

To disable cookies on this site and on others you can disable cookies in your browser. We suggest consulting the Help section of your browser or taking a look at the About Cookies website which offers guidance for all modern browsers.
